The award winning app Solwe

The hackathon NASA Space Apps Challenge is an international competition with participants from all over the world. The task is to choose one of 28 challenges and come up with the best possible solution over a weekend. I participated in a team with five other girls in the Swedish competition arranged by HiQ.

Duration

3 days in 2022 during the hackaton "NASA Space Apps Challenge"

Tools

Figma, Xcode and Google Forms

My role

In a team of six my main role was UI-designer and UX-researcher

My team chose the challenge 'You are my sunshine,' which involved creating an application designed to handle NASA's vast amount of data. The goal was to make the data easily manageable and interpretable for everyday people who own solar panels, enabling them to derive practical benefits from it.

The project started with research where we looked into current solar panel applications and by examining the target group through a survey using Google Forms. It reached about 300 respondents that owned solar panels and therefore could be considered potential users. After this, two personas and two user scenarios were created as a basis for idea generation.
The final result is “Solwe” - a prototype of an application that simplifies the usage of worldwide renewable energy resources all together in one single application. The core of the idea is to create added value for solar panel owners through a user experience based on AI and personalization. The application gives the user sustainable recommendations based on the solar panel’s current production as well as a prognosis of expected production based on NASA’s weather data. For this we won first prize at the competition in Sweden.
